Yorkstone house sign

11/22/2016

"Mouse House" ornamental hand carved stone house sign
What gives traditional buildings their charm? Well for me the use of local material is part of it, and in rural parts of South and West Yorkshire this means sandstone, and generally much of this material would have been brought from a local quarry of which there were once many. This makes the buildings of a place, as if they have grown from the landscape (which in sense they have).

Another element is that traditional rural buildings have a wonderful individuality, The builders having to become skilled in  the use of materials which are far less uniform and regular than much of that which is used in the building trade today, even when considering Victorian masonry which could be incredibly precise. Details on a property such as house names and lettering can really enhance an area.
When we carve stone house signs for an older property, how it matches in with the surroundings is something we have to consider. This sign for a rural house has been carved from a reclaimed piece of Yorkstone and has a font not too dissimilar to lettering that adorns nearby farm houses. Once fixed into place it will become part of the fabric of the building.
